Edward Vaughn Summers, 88, passed away July 4, 2011 surrounded by his family.He was born June 15, 1923, the third son and fourth child of William Henry and Ruby Thomson Summers. Two more girls came into the family later. He graduated from Juab High School in Nephi, Utah in 1942. He served in the army from March 3, 1943 to April 15, 1946. Starting out in Air Force Pilot Training, until, to his dismay, the ASPT programs were cut way back and he was transferred to the army and trained as an inspector of the meats and dairy for all military branches. Vaughn attended the University of Utah graduating in Business in 1950. He married, Nila Newton, the girl next door, in the Salt Lake Temple on Friday, September 13, 1946. Together they were the parents of seven children. He and Nila have also been blessed with 32 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many positions such as; Bishop, Counselor in Bishopric, Counselor in Stake Young Men, High Priest Group Leader, and most importantly Home Teacher to name but a few. He and Nila served in the Australian, Brisbane Mission from 1992 through March 1994. Vaughn, served continuously in the Church for 60 years. The Gospel of Jesus Christ and Family provided the foundation of his life. Vaughn is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Nila; children: Denise (Ron), Ann (Greg), Leigh (Gordon), Lori (Richard), Gordon (Terri), John (Debra), Robert (Alicia), grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Joy Neilsen and Wilma Morris, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents: sister: Madge Newton; brothers: Richard and Robert Summers; grandchildren: David Bywater and Jessica Paulsen. Services will be held Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Butler 1st Ward, 2700 East 7000 South, Cottonwood Heights, at 12:00 p.m. Family and friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Mona City Cemetery at 4 p.m. Vaughn's family would like to thank our friends, the doctors and nurses, at the V.A. Hospital for their loving service to Dad and our family.

Kodey Hughes was wonderful enough to come and play Taps for the graveside. Between him and the 21 gun salute we were all in tears.
As my uncles folded the flag I could not be more proud of the family I come from and all that I have learned from each of them.
I still feel very sad that I didn't get a chance to tell him goodbye or that I love him one last time. It just makes me remember that you can't take anything for granted. Tell those you love and care about that you do because you may not get another chance. I still talk to Grandpa and I feel like he is listening even though I can't see him. Love you Grandpa!
